Hyper Rhizome

Interweaving Scherer’s ongoing study of plant root systems, this exhibition presents a layered examination of how biological material can be transformed into sustainable textile. From a root-bound maxi dress to a knotted radicle tapestry, the exhibition explores the human-nature relationship and our compulsion to control our natural environment.

Diana Scherer developed an innovative material research in her quest for a new and sustainable textile. She approaches the root system as if it were yarn; the refined, white root structure of grass reminds her of silk; and she compares the robust yellowish strands of daisy roots to wool. The structures in her work are based on the ordering principles of nature. This theory assumes that the same elements and patterns recur in all plants and follow a geometric order.
